What is the name of the international committee that sets global banking regulations, based in Basel?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of the international committee that sets global banking regulations, based in Basel? The answer is the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, usually abbreviated BCBS, is a forum of central banks and banking regulators that develops international standards for prudential banking supervision. It was established by the Group of Ten central-bank governors at the end of 1974, after serious disruption in international banking markets, including the failure of Germany’s Bankhaus Herstatt.

The committee is hosted by the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, but it is not the BIS itself. That distinction explains a frequent quiz error: the BIS provides the institutional home and secretariat support, while the Basel Committee develops supervisory standards and guidelines.

Its best-known work is the Basel framework. Basel I, published in 1988, introduced international minimum capital requirements; Basel II expanded risk-sensitive rules, and Basel III added reforms after the 2008 financial crisis. The committee’s standards are not automatically binding law. Individual countries and jurisdictions must implement them through their own regulations.
