What is the name of the inn at Bree in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The inn at Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is called The Prancing Pony.

The inn is run by Barliman Butterbur and becomes an important stop for Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin after they leave the Shire. In Bree, the hobbits encounter the mysterious ranger known as Strider, who is later revealed to be Aragorn. The meeting changes the group’s route and protection during the journey to Rivendell.

The Prancing Pony is more than a place to sleep. It is a crossroads where travelers from different parts of Middle-earth meet, making it a useful setting for rumors, danger and unexpected alliances. Frodo’s decision to put on the Ring during the inn’s common-room scene draws unwanted attention.

The Green Dragon is an inn in Hobbiton, while The Golden Perch is associated with Stock in the Shire. The Ivy Bush is another Shire inn. These names are sometimes confused because Tolkien gives several rural communities their own taverns.
