What is the name of the iconic volcanic peak on Bora Bora?

The iconic volcanic peak on Bora Bora is Mount Otemanu. Rising 727 metres above sea level, it is the highest point on the island and dominates many of Bora Bora’s most recognizable landscapes.

Mount Otemanu is the eroded remnant of an extinct volcano. Bora Bora formed through volcanic activity, and as the volcano gradually subsided, a surrounding coral reef and lagoon developed. The steep, dark rock of Mount Otemanu now rises dramatically from the island’s green interior and blue lagoon.

The mountain is often seen beside the smaller Mount Pahia, another prominent peak on Bora Bora. Although Mount Otemanu is a major attraction for photography and sightseeing, its rugged terrain means that reaching the summit is not a straightforward ordinary hike, and many visitors admire it from the lagoon or surrounding roads.

A frequent confusion is choosing Mount Pahia because it is also a famous Bora Bora landmark. Mount Pahia is nearby, but Mount Otemanu is the island’s highest and most iconic peak. Aoraki, by contrast, is New Zealand’s highest mountain.
