The iconic rock formation in the Blue Mountains of Australia is the Three Sisters.

The Three Sisters are three sandstone pillars on the northern escarpment of the Jamison Valley near Katoomba, New South Wales. They are among the Blue Mountains’ best-known landmarks and are especially prominent from Echo Point lookout.

The formation was shaped by erosion over millions of years. Wind, rain and rivers gradually wore away the surrounding sandstone cliffs, leaving the more resistant columns standing above the valley. The pillars are named Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, with elevations of approximately 922, 918 and 906 metres respectively.

A popular story says that three sisters were turned to stone for protection during a tribal battle. However, that version is not a reliable traditional account: the widely repeated tale appears to have been created by non-Indigenous writer Patricia Stone. The formation remains culturally significant, and the Three Sisters were declared an Aboriginal Place in New South Wales in 2014. They should not be confused with New Zealand’s Remarkables or Australia’s Twelve Apostles.
