The iconic performing arts centre on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour is the Sydney Opera House. Its sail-like roof forms one of Australia's most recognizable landmarks, while the building operates as a multi-venue centre for opera, concerts, theatre, dance, and other performances.

Danish architect Jørn Utzon won the international design competition in 1957, and construction began in 1959. The building was formally opened on 20 October 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II, after major cost, engineering, and scheduling challenges. Utzon's original concept was later completed by an Australian team led by architect Peter Hall.

The roof appears to contain white shells, but its surfaces are made from thousands of precast concrete sections covered with glossy white and matte cream tiles. The complex includes the Concert Hall, Joan Sutherland Theatre, Drama Theatre, Playhouse, and smaller performance spaces. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, while Bennelong Point itself has a much older Aboriginal and colonial history.
