What is the name of the iconic dome of Florence Cathedral designed by Brunelleschi?

The story behind the answer

The iconic dome of Florence Cathedral designed by Brunelleschi is Brunelleschi's Dome. It crowns the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly called the Duomo, in Florence, Italy.

The cathedral had stood unfinished for decades because its enormous octagonal crossing was too wide for conventional wooden scaffolding. Filippo Brunelleschi won the 1418 competition to solve the problem, defeating or outmaneuvering rival architect Lorenzo Ghiberti. Construction began in 1420 and the dome was completed in 1436.

Brunelleschi used a revolutionary double-shell design, with an inner structural dome and a lighter outer shell. Herringbone brickwork, stone-and-iron tension chains, and specially designed lifting machines helped stabilize and construct the dome without a traditional temporary supporting frame.

A common mix-up is calling the dome itself “Il Duomo.” In everyday usage, il Duomo usually means the cathedral, while Brunelleschi's Dome identifies the famous dome specifically. The dome remains one of the largest masonry domes ever built and a defining achievement of Renaissance architecture.
