What is the name of the iconic boxy truck used by UPS for deliveries?

The story behind the answer

UPS calls its iconic boxy delivery truck a package car.

“Package car” is UPS’s own term for the purpose-built delivery vans that carry parcels on local routes. They are often simply called delivery trucks or vans in everyday conversation, but “package car” is the canonical UPS terminology. The vehicles come in several sizes and configurations, depending on route length, package volume, and operating conditions.

Their distinctive appearance includes a tall body, a high roofline, and the rounded “bubble-nose” front associated with many UPS vehicles. That design was introduced in 1965 and became one of the company’s most recognizable visual signatures. Bodies have been supplied by manufacturers such as Morgan Olson, Union City Body, and Utilimaster, mounted on different truck chassis over the years.

Not every UPS delivery vehicle is a package car. The company also uses tractor-trailers, smaller vans, bicycles, aircraft, and other transport for different stages of delivery. “Box truck” and “step van” describe broad vehicle types, so they may sound plausible, but they are not UPS’s standard name for its signature delivery vehicle.
