The House M.D. episode in which House teaches three diagnostic cases is titled “Three Stories.”
The episode is the show’s season-one finale and uses a lecture by House to structure three apparently separate medical cases. As the stories unfold, the audience learns that they are connected to House’s own medical history and to the origin of his chronic leg disability.
“Three Stories” was written by David Shore and directed by Paris Barclay. Its unusual structure allowed the episode to move between classroom teaching, flashbacks, and House’s personal past rather than following only the standard patient-of-the-week pattern.
The episode received major critical recognition. Shore won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for it, and the episode also won the Humanitas Prize in the 60-minute category. It is often cited as one of the show’s defining episodes.
