What is the name of the horse that has spots on its body?

The horse breed best known for having spots on its body is the Appaloosa. This American breed is famous for colorful coat patterns that can include spots across the rump, back, neck, or much of the body.

Appaloosa patterns are part of the leopard-complex group of markings. Recognized patterns include the leopard pattern, in which dark spots cover a mostly white coat; the blanket pattern, a white area over the hips; and snowflake markings, where white flecks appear on a darker coat. Many Appaloosas also have mottled skin, striped hooves, and a visible white area around the eye.

The breed developed in the United States and is strongly associated with the Nez Perce people of the Pacific Northwest. The name is generally linked to the Palouse region. A common mistake is assuming every spotted horse is an Appaloosa: Paints, pintos, and individual horses of other breeds can also have spots. Conversely, not every Appaloosa displays the same dramatic pattern.
