Bilbo Baggins is the hobbit who accompanies the dwarves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Bilbo begins the story as a comfort-loving resident of Hobbiton. The wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, draw him into a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the dragon Smaug.
During the adventure, Bilbo finds a mysterious ring in the Goblin tunnels and wins a riddle contest against Gollum. That ring later becomes central to The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo and Frodo are both Bagginses, but Frodo is the ring-bearer in the later trilogy rather than the protagonist of The Hobbit.
