What is the name of the hill climbed late in the Boston Marathon?

The story behind the answer

Heartbreak Hill is the famous climb late in the Boston Marathon.

The hill is part of Newton, Massachusetts, near Boston College, and appears after the race has already passed the halfway point. It is the final and best-known climb in Boston’s series of Newton hills, making its steepness particularly demanding for tired runners.

The name became famous after the 1936 race, when Johnny Kelley caught Ellison “Tarzan” Brown near the hill but Brown rallied and won. Boston Globe reporter Jerry Nason described Kelley’s move as breaking Brown’s heart, giving the hill its enduring name.

Heartbreak Hill is not the highest point on the course, and the Boston Marathon includes several earlier climbs. Its reputation comes from timing, gradient, and accumulated fatigue rather than exceptional altitude.
