Mons Huygens
Answer
Mons Huygens
What is the name of the highest mountain on the Moon? The commonly cited answer is Mons Huygens.
Mons Huygens is located in the Montes Apenninus mountain range on the Moon’s near side, beside the enormous Mare Imbrium impact basin. Modern lunar altimetry places it roughly 5.3 kilometers above the surrounding basin floor, making it the standard answer in general astronomy references and trivia.
The range formed from ejecta thrown outward when the impact that created Mare Imbrium reshaped the lunar surface billions of years ago. Mons Huygens was named after Christiaan Huygens, the Dutch astronomer who discovered Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.
There is an important technical distinction: Mons Huygens is often called the Moon’s tallest mountain, but the Moon’s highest point relative to its reference surface lies elsewhere on the far side and is about 6,500 meters higher than Mons Huygens. For a conventional question asking for the highest mountain, however, Mons Huygens is the established canonical answer.
