What is the name of the highest court in India?

The story behind the answer

The Supreme Court of India is the highest court in India and the apex of the country’s judicial system.

The Constitution of India provides for the Supreme Court as the nation’s top judicial body. It has original, appellate, and advisory jurisdiction, allowing it to hear certain disputes directly, review decisions from lower courts, and provide constitutional advice when properly referred.

India’s High Courts are the highest courts within individual states or groups of states, but they remain below the national Supreme Court. The Supreme Court can hear appeals from them, and Article 141 makes the law declared by the Supreme Court binding on all courts within India.

The institution came into existence when the Constitution took effect on January 26, 1950. It was formally inaugurated two days later in the Chamber of Princes in the old Parliament House. It succeeded the Federal Court of India, which had operated from 1937 until independence-era constitutional change replaced it.
