What is the name of the high school that Michael Jordan attended?

The story behind the answer

Michael Jordan attended Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. The school is commonly called Laney High School, but its full name is the canonical answer to this question.

Jordan attended Laney during the late 1970s and early 1980s, playing basketball, baseball, and football. He became nationally famous after developing into one of North Carolina’s best high-school basketball players, although the often-repeated story that he was simply “cut” from the varsity team is misleading. As a sophomore, he was placed on the junior-varsity roster partly because of his height and physical development; he grew rapidly and returned as a varsity standout.

Laney helped shape more than Jordan’s basketball identity. He also wore number 45 for the school’s baseball team, the same number he later used with the Birmingham Barons. After high school, Jordan played college basketball at the University of North Carolina, where he hit the winning shot in the 1982 NCAA championship game as a freshman.
