What is the name of the haunted videotape’s main ghost in the 2002 horror film The Ring?

The story behind the answer

The haunted videotape’s main ghost in the 2002 horror film The Ring is Samara Morgan.

The film follows journalist Rachel Keller, played by Naomi Watts, as she investigates a videotape reportedly linked to the deaths of everyone who watches it. Samara is the supernatural child whose traumatic history and psychic powers drive the curse.

The Ring is an American remake of the 1998 Japanese film Ringu, which was directed by Hideo Nakata. In Ringu, the corresponding character is named Sadako Yamamura. Samara and Sadako are therefore related versions of the same central figure, but they are not the same name within their respective films.

The American film was directed by Gore Verbinski and released in 2002. Its imagery of a girl emerging from a television became one of the defining visual moments of early-2000s horror.
