What is the name of the goat that produces mead in Valhalla?
Answer
Heiðrún
Answer
Heiðrún
Heiðrún is the goat that produces mead in Valhalla.
In the Poetic Edda, Heiðrún stands on the roof or in the hall of Valhalla and feeds on the branches of the cosmic tree or stag-like tree Læraðr. From her udders flows mead that fills a cauldron, providing drink for the einherjar—the warriors chosen by Odin who died in battle.
Heiðrún belongs to Valhalla’s unusual animal imagery. Nearby stands the stag Eikþyrnir, whose antlers drip water into Hvergelmir, the well from which rivers flow. The hall’s warriors also feast on the boar Sæhrímnir, which is cooked each day and restored afterward. These creatures are therefore easy to mix up, but only Heiðrún is the mead-producing goat.
Valhalla is ruled by Odin and is not the same as Hel, the realm associated with many who die from illness or old age. The goat’s endlessly replenished drink helps explain the hall’s cycle of daily feasting and combat.
