What is the name of the girl in 'The Wizard of Oz'?

The story behind the answer

The girl in 'The Wizard of Oz' is Dorothy Gale, the Kansas farm girl swept into the magical land of Oz by a cyclone.

In L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, Dorothy arrives in Oz with her dog, Toto, after her farmhouse lands on the Wicked Witch of the East. She follows the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, hoping the Wizard can help her return home. Along the way, she befriends the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion.

Dorothy is often confused with Judy Garland, the actress who played her in the famous 1939 film. Her companions are also common distractors: Toto is her dog, Aunt Em is her guardian in Kansas, and Glinda is the Good Witch who helps her. Dorothy's full name, Dorothy Gale, is used in both the book and screen versions.
