What is the name of the girl in 'Bridge to Terabithia'?

The story behind the answer

The girl in Bridge to Terabithia is Leslie Burke.

Leslie is the new neighbor and classmate of Jesse Aarons in Katherine Paterson’s 1977 children’s novel. She is intelligent, athletic, imaginative, and unusually confident, quickly challenging the boys at school by winning a race. Her friendship with Jesse becomes the emotional center of the story and helps him develop courage, creativity, and a broader understanding of the world.

Together, Leslie and Jesse create Terabithia, an imaginary kingdom in the woods that they reach by swinging across a creek. Leslie names the kingdom and takes the role of queen, while Jesse becomes king. Their fantasy world gives both children a place to confront fears and frustrations from everyday life.

The novel is partly inspired by the death of Lisa Hill, a friend of Paterson’s son, who was struck by lightning in 1974. Leslie’s death in the story is therefore a major turning point, forcing Jesse to grieve and mature. The book won the Newbery Medal in 1978 and was adapted into television and feature films.
