What is the name of the Gaudí-designed palace for Eusebi Güell in Barcelona?

The story behind the answer

The Gaudí-designed palace for Eusebi Güell in Barcelona is Palau Güell. Often translated as Güell Palace, it is a mansion on Carrer Nou de la Rambla in the El Raval neighbourhood.

Eusebi Güell was a wealthy Catalan industrialist, politician and arts patron who became one of Antoni Gaudí’s most important clients. Gaudí designed Palau Güell as an urban residence and reception space for the Güell family. Construction took place from 1886 to 1888, making it an early major collaboration between the architect and his patron.

The building’s narrow site encouraged a dramatic vertical arrangement. Carriages entered through ornate wrought-iron gates, while the basement included stables and service areas. Inside, the central entertainment room rises through several levels; small openings near the ceiling could make hanging lanterns resemble a starry sky.

Palau Güell is sometimes confused with Park Güell or the Güell Pavilions, which were also commissioned by Güell. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage property “Works of Antoni Gaudí” in 1984, and the property was later extended in 2005.
