What is the name of the foundation established by the founder of the S.S. Kresge retail chain?

The story behind the answer

The foundation established by S. S. Kresge was The Kresge Foundation.

Sebastian Spering Kresge built the S. S. Kresge Company into a major American five-and-ten-cent retail chain. In 1924, he established The Kresge Foundation with a broad mission to promote the well-being of mankind.

The foundation is separate from the retail company, which later became Kmart. That corporate name change is why people sometimes connect the foundation with Kmart rather than with Kresge’s original chain.

Kresge continued contributing to the foundation during his lifetime, giving it more than $60 million by the time of his death in 1966. The organization later expanded its grantmaking in areas including cities, health, the environment, and the arts.
