What is the name of the fisherman who visited the Dragon Palace in Japanese legend?

The story behind the answer

The fisherman who visited the Dragon Palace in Japanese legend is Urashima Tarō.

In the best-known version of the tale, Urashima Tarō rescues a sea turtle and is carried beneath the waves to Ryūgū-jō, the Dragon Palace. There he is welcomed by Princess Otohime and enjoys what seems to be only a short stay. When he returns home, he discovers that many decades—or about a century in common retellings—have passed.

Otohime gives him a jeweled box called a tamatebako and warns him not to open it. He eventually does so, and the box releases the time he had escaped, transforming him into an old man. Some versions end differently, including one in which he becomes a crane.

The story is much older than its modern children’s-tale form. Related accounts appear in eighth-century sources, including the Fudoki of Tango Province, the Nihon Shoki, and the Man’yōshū. Older versions may call him Urashimako and place his journey in Hōrai rather than the underwater palace.
