Kanto is the first region featured in the Pokémon core video games.
The region appears in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, the first-generation games for the Game Boy. It contains familiar locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Celadon City, and the Pokémon League. Players travel through Kanto while earning eight Gym Badges and completing the regional Pokédex.
Kanto is based largely on Japan's real-world Kantō region, which includes Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. The game's version uses fictional towns and routes, but landmarks, geography, and cultural references helped shape its layout. The name is also used for the first regional Pokédex.
Kanto later returned in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal as a post-game area, making it unusual among Pokémon regions. It has also appeared in remakes, television stories, spin-offs, and other media. The region's importance makes it one of the most recognizable settings associated with Pokémon's 30-year history.
