What is the name of the first book in the 'Broken Earth' trilogy?

The story behind the answer

The first book in N. K. Jemisin’s “Broken Earth” trilogy is “The Fifth Season.”

Published in 2015, the novel is set on the Stillness, a supercontinent repeatedly devastated by earthquakes, volcanic activity, climate upheaval, and other planetary disasters. These recurring periods of catastrophic disruption are known as Fifth Seasons, giving the book its title.

The story follows several characters whose lives are shaped by orogeny, a feared ability to manipulate geological forces. Jemisin uses this speculative power system to explore oppression, environmental collapse, family, survival, and the consequences of treating people with unusual abilities as threats.

“The Fifth Season” is followed by “The Obelisk Gate” and “The Stone Sky.” Readers sometimes confuse the order because “The Stone Sky” is the trilogy’s concluding volume, while “The Obelisk Gate” is the second book. “The Fifth Season” won the 2016 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
