What is the name of the first block in the Bitcoin blockchain?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of the first block in the Bitcoin blockchain? It is called the genesis block.

The genesis block is Bitcoin’s first block and is also identified as block 0. Satoshi Nakamoto mined it on 3 January 2009, establishing the starting point for the blockchain. Unlike later blocks, it has no preceding Bitcoin block to reference, so it serves as the chain’s foundational block.

The block carried a reward of 50 bitcoins, although that reward cannot be spent in the same ordinary way as later block rewards. Its coinbase data contains the message “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks,” quoting a headline from the British newspaper The Times.

“Starting block,” “prime block,” and “origin block” may sound understandable, but they are not Bitcoin’s standard name for block 0. “Genesis block” is a broader blockchain term, and other cryptocurrencies often use it for their own first block as well. Bitcoin’s genesis block is therefore both a technical starting point and a historical marker.
