What is the name of the fictional sheriff of Twin Peaks played by Michael Ontkean?

Harry S. Truman is the fictional sheriff of Twin Peaks played by Michael Ontkean.

Truman leads the local sheriff’s department when FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper arrives to investigate Laura Palmer’s murder. He acts as Cooper’s practical local counterpart, providing knowledge of the town, its residents, and the surrounding woods.

The character’s name intentionally recalls U.S. president Harry S. Truman, although the series presents him as a small-town law-enforcement officer rather than a historical figure. Truman is generally portrayed as dependable, loyal, and protective of Twin Peaks.

Viewers sometimes confuse Harry Truman with Dale Cooper because both investigate the central mystery. Cooper is the visiting FBI agent, while Truman is the elected local sheriff. Michael Ontkean played Truman in the original series and film, but did not return for Twin Peaks: The Return.
