The fictional school in the Harry Potter series is Hogwarts. Its full name is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a boarding school for young witches and wizards in Scotland.
Hogwarts first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, published in 1997. In the story, students generally begin at age eleven and study there for seven years. The school teaches subjects such as Potions, Transfiguration, Charms, Herbology, and Defence Against the Dark Arts.
A common mix-up is confusing Hogwarts with other wizarding schools in the wider Wizarding World. Durmstrang and Beauxbatons are European schools that appear in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, while Ilvermorny is a North American school introduced in later Wizarding World material. Hogwarts is the central school in the original series.
The school is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Its Latin motto, “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus,” means “Never tickle a sleeping dragon.”
