Pandora is the fictional moon in James Cameron’s Avatar.
In Avatar, Pandora is a moon orbiting the fictional gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. It is home to the Na’vi and contains the valuable mineral unobtanium, which drives the human mining operation depicted in the film. Pandora’s forests, wildlife, and interconnected ecological system form the central setting of the story.
The moon’s name comes from the mythological Pandora, whose story involves a container releasing troubles into the world. Cameron’s film does not retell that myth, but the shared name evokes a place containing extraordinary and potentially dangerous things. Pandora is sometimes incorrectly called a planet; within the film’s fictional astronomy, it is specifically a moon.
