The fictional Maine town where the 1976 horror film Carrie is set is called Chamberlain.
Chamberlain is the small community where Carrie White attends high school and lives with her deeply religious mother, Margaret. The town’s social environment helps establish the humiliation, isolation, and bullying that precede Carrie’s telekinetic revenge at the school prom.
Brian De Palma directed the film, which adapts Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel. Sissy Spacek plays Carrie, and Piper Laurie plays Margaret. Although Chamberlain is fictional, the story uses recognizable features of rural and small-town Maine, including close social scrutiny and an oppressive sense that everyone knows everyone else.
Readers sometimes confuse Chamberlain with Derry, Castle Rock, or Jerusalem’s Lot, other fictional Maine communities created by Stephen King. Those towns appear in different King stories. Carrie’s school is Bates High School, another fictional institution associated with Chamberlain.
