Quenya is the fictional language created by J.R.R. Tolkien whose name is associated with “speech.”
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s Elvish languages and is especially associated with the High Elves. Tolkien developed it with influences from languages including Finnish, Latin, and Greek, while giving it its own grammar, vocabulary, and historical development. In Middle-earth, Quenya is an ancient and prestigious language rather than the everyday speech of every Elf.
Tolkien’s language construction was unusually extensive for fiction. He created sound systems, word forms, and relationships between languages, then embedded them in the histories of his peoples. This philological approach helped make Middle-earth feel like a world with deep cultural memory.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language, and it is more commonly used in many Third Age settings. Khuzdul belongs to the Dwarves, while the Black Speech is associated with Mordor, so these names are not interchangeable.
