The fictional land Dorothy visits in The Wizard of Oz is Oz.
In the 1939 film, Dorothy Gale is swept away from Kansas by a tornado and lands in the colorful realm of Oz. Her house accidentally kills the Wicked Witch of the East, and Dorothy receives the witch’s magical ruby slippers before setting off along the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City.
Oz is divided into regions associated with different colors and witches. Dorothy encounters the Munchkins in the east, the Winkies in the west, and the Good Witch Glinda. Along the journey, she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, who hope the Wizard can give them wisdom, a heart, and courage.
The film is based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The movie is especially remembered for its transition from sepia-toned Kansas to Technicolor Oz, although the original book and later adaptations portray the land in different ways. Oz is not Narnia, Neverland, or Wonderland; those belong to separate fictional worlds.
