What is the name of the fictional kingdom in “The Princess Bride”? It is Florin. William Goldman places Buttercup, Westley, Prince Humperdinck, and much of the adventure in this invented European-style kingdom.
In the story, Buttercup is a farm girl in Florin who falls in love with her farmhand, Westley. After she believes Westley has died, she becomes engaged to Prince Humperdinck, the heir to Florin’s throne. The kingdom’s politics and royal succession provide the backdrop for the kidnapping, attempted marriage, and rescue plot.
Florin is paired with the neighboring fictional country of Guilder, which is sometimes mistaken for the answer because Humperdinck uses a supposed Guilder kidnapping as part of a plan to provoke war. Genovia and Zamunda belong to other fictional royal stories and are not part of Goldman’s world.
Goldman’s 1973 novel is presented as an abridgment of a supposedly older work by the fictional S. Morgenstern. The 1987 film adaptation, directed by Rob Reiner, made Florin and Guilder familiar to an even wider audience.
