Bilbo Baggins lives in the Shire in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
The Shire is a peaceful, fertile region inhabited mainly by hobbits. It lies in the northwestern part of Middle-earth and is known for its villages, cultivated fields, hedgerows, inns, and comfortable hobbit-holes. Hobbit society there values food, family, gardens, and routine.
Bilbo’s home, Bag End, is located in Hobbiton, one of the Shire’s best-known settlements. Frodo Baggins also lives at Bag End for part of The Lord of the Rings, making the Shire the starting point for both Bilbo’s and Frodo’s major journeys.
The Shire is not the same place as Bree, although both are in Eriador and appear early in The Lord of the Rings. Rivendell is an Elven refuge farther east, while Gondor is a human kingdom much farther south. Tolkien partly based the Shire’s landscape and social atmosphere on the English countryside and rural communities he knew.
