What is the name of the fictional bear in A.A. Milne's stories?

The story behind the answer

The fictional bear in A. A. Milne’s stories is Winnie-the-Pooh.

Milne created Winnie-the-Pooh as an anthropomorphic teddy bear inspired by his son Christopher Robin Milne’s stuffed toy. The character first appeared as Edward Bear in Milne’s 1924 poetry collection When We Were Very Young, then appeared by name in a 1925 Christmas story. The first book of prose stories, Winnie-the-Pooh, was published in 1926.

The name combines Christopher Robin’s toy bear’s nickname, Pooh, with Winnie, a black bear Christopher Robin saw at London Zoo. The zoo bear was named after Winnipeg, the Canadian city associated with her owner. Illustrator E. H. Shepard created the classic drawings, though his visual model for Pooh was reportedly a teddy bear belonging to his own son.

Disney later adapted the character, usually styling the name as “Winnie the Pooh” without hyphens. Baloo, Yogi, and Paddington are also famous fictional bears, but they come from different books, cartoons, or film traditions.
