What is the name of the female playable character introduced in Pokémon Crystal?

The story behind the answer

Kris is the female playable character introduced in Pokémon Crystal.

Pokémon Crystal is an enhanced version of Pokémon Gold and Silver, released for the Game Boy Color in Japan in 2000 and internationally in 2001. It retained the Johto adventure while adding story, presentation, and gameplay changes.

Kris was the first playable female protagonist in the main Pokémon role-playing series. Players could choose her instead of the male protagonist, Ethan, when beginning the adventure. This choice expanded the player’s role beyond the earlier games, which had only offered a male playable character.

Kris is often confused with later protagonists such as May from Ruby and Sapphire or Dawn from Diamond and Pearl. She is also distinct from Lyra, who replaced her in the later Nintendo DS remake Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The character’s original design is therefore specifically associated with Crystal.
