What is the name of the famous wheelstanding Plymouth Barracuda drag car?
Answer
Hemi Under Glass
Answer
Hemi Under Glass
The famous wheelstanding Plymouth Barracuda drag car is called Hemi Under Glass.
Hurst Performance created the exhibition car in 1965 to promote its products. The design placed a fuel-injected Chrysler Hemi engine far behind the driver, beneath the Barracuda’s large rear window. That rearward weight bias made it possible for the car to lift its front wheels and travel down the strip on the rear tires.
Wild Bill Shrewsberry helped pioneer the original wheelstander, while Bob Riggle became its best-known driver beginning with the 1966 season. The name is often expanded to Hurst Hemi Under Glass, especially when referring to the Hurst-sponsored cars; “Hemi Under Glass” is the accepted short name.
It is commonly confused with other famous exhibition and drag cars, including Little Red Wagon, a wheelstanding Dodge A100 pickup, and Swamp Rat, Don Garlits’s celebrated Top Fuel dragster name. Hemi Under Glass was an exhibition wheelstander rather than a conventional NHRA professional class car.
