What is the name of the famous downhill section in the Comrades Marathon?

The story behind the answer

Fields Hill is the famous downhill section in the Comrades Marathon.

Fields Hill appears on the Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, one of the two alternating directions used by South Africa’s Comrades Marathon. The descent is steep and can be especially punishing because it arrives after runners have already covered much of the demanding route.

Comrades is an ultramarathon rather than a standard marathon. Its distance is roughly 89 kilometres, although the exact certified distance varies by route and year. The race alternates between an Up Run and a Down Run, so the major climbs and descents change direction from one edition to the next.

The event began in 1921, when Vic Clapham organized it to honor soldiers who died in the First World War. Its famous hills include Polly Shortts, Inchanga and Fields Hill, but the course’s precise landmarks can vary slightly with road changes.
