What is the name of the famous ancient Egyptian sculpture with a lion's body and a human head?

The story behind the answer

The Great Sphinx of Giza is the famous ancient Egyptian sculpture with a lion’s body and a human head. It is carved from the limestone bedrock of the Giza Plateau and depicts a reclining sphinx facing east toward the rising sun.

The monument was created during Egypt’s Old Kingdom, probably around 2600–2500 BCE. Scholars continue to debate whether it was built during the reign of Khufu or his son Khafre, although the association with Khafre is especially common. Its original ancient name is unknown; “sphinx” is a later classical term borrowed from descriptions of a mythical human-lion creature.

Unlike the Greek sphinx of the Oedipus story, Egyptian sphinxes were generally protective royal figures. The Great Sphinx has a man’s head, no wings, and a body modeled on a lion. It measures about 73 metres long, 19 metres wide, and 20 metres high. Centuries of erosion, damage, and restoration have altered its appearance, including the loss of its nose. The Statue of Liberty, Venus de Milo, and Colossus of Rhodes are entirely different monuments.
