What is the name of the Downton Abbey footman killed in World War I?

William Mason is the Downton Abbey footman who dies from injuries sustained during World War I.

William begins the series as Downton’s second footman. He is gentle, loyal and musically talented, and he develops strong feelings for Daisy. His father, Mr Mason, initially opposes William’s enlistment because William is his only surviving child, but William eventually goes to war.

After suffering serious injuries, William returns to Downton and is cared for in the household. He marries Daisy on his deathbed, allowing her to comfort him while also creating a lasting connection between Daisy and his father. William dies in 1918, and his death has important consequences for the servants’ community.

The wording can cause a small historical mix-up: William is not shown dying in a battlefield scene. The story says he dies from war injuries, which is why he is remembered as Downton’s World War I casualty. Andy Parker, Jimmy Kent and Alfred Nugent are different footmen who serve at Downton.
