What is the name of the detective in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Her name is Precious Ramotswe.

Mma Precious Ramotswe is the protagonist of Alexander McCall Smith’s series, which is set mainly in Botswana. She opens The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in Gaborone after using an inheritance from her father to establish her business.

The first novel was published in 1998 and tells Ramotswe’s story from childhood through the creation of her agency. She solves cases involving missing people, family disputes, fraud, and other personal problems. Her approach depends less on forensic technology than on patience, empathy, careful observation, and an understanding of people.

“Mma” is a Setswana term of respect for a woman, so the character is often called Mma Ramotswe. Grace Makutsi is her secretary and later a detective and business partner, while Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni is her friend and mechanic. Those characters are important, but Precious Ramotswe is the agency’s central detective.
