What is the name of the desert that contains Death Valley?
Answer
Mojave Desert
Answer
Mojave Desert
Death Valley is contained within the Mojave Desert.
Death Valley is a long desert valley in eastern California, located in the northern Mojave near the Nevada border. Its Badwater Basin reaches about 86 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point in North America. The valley is also the principal feature of Death Valley National Park.
The Mojave is the smallest and driest of the four major deserts of the American Southwest. Its dryness is intensified by rain-shadow effects: moisture from the Pacific must cross several mountain ranges, including the Sierra Nevada, before air reaches the valley. By then, much of the moisture has already fallen as rain or snow.
Death Valley is sometimes associated with the neighboring Great Basin Desert because the two regions meet near its northern edge. The Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts are farther south and east. The name Mojave comes from the Indigenous Mohave people; both “Mojave” and “Mohave” appear in English usage, while the tribal nation officially uses Mojave.
