The default desktop wallpaper in Windows XP was called Bliss.
Bliss is a landscape photograph showing a vivid blue sky, white clouds, and a green rolling hill. Photographer Charles O'Rear took the picture in January 1996 near the Napa–Sonoma county line in California. The hill had once contained vineyards, but a phylloxera infestation led to the vines being removed, leaving the grass-covered landscape seen in the image.
Microsoft acquired the photograph's rights in 2000 and selected it for Windows XP, released in 2001. The image complemented XP's Luna visual style and its bright blue and green color palette. Microsoft also used Bliss extensively in the operating system's advertising campaign.
Bliss is often mistaken for a digitally generated scene, but it was a real photograph. O'Rear used a Mamiya RZ67 camera and Fujifilm Velvia film, and said he did not digitally manipulate the original image. The location later became a vineyard again, changing the appearance of the hill.
“Green Hill” describes the picture's subject but is not its official name. “Autumn” and “Tulips” were names of other Windows wallpapers.
