What is the name of the church in Milan that houses The Last Supper?
Answer
Santa Maria delle Grazie
Answer
Santa Maria delle Grazie
The church in Milan that houses Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper is Santa Maria delle Grazie. The painting is located on the wall of the Dominican convent’s refectory, or dining hall, rather than inside the church’s main nave.
The complex began in the 15th century under Duke Francesco I Sforza. His successor, Ludovico Sforza, expanded and redesigned parts of it as a Sforza family mausoleum. Leonardo painted The Last Supper between about 1495 and 1498 for the convent’s refectory, opposite a Crucifixion by Giovanni Donato da Montorfano.
Santa Maria delle Grazie is often confused with Milan Cathedral, the Duomo di Milano, because both are major landmarks in the city. The church and convent became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. During an Allied bombing raid in 1943, much of the refectory was destroyed, but the wall bearing Leonardo’s mural survived after being protected with sandbags.
