What is the name of the characteristic rear window design element on many BMWs? It is the Hofmeister kink.

The Hofmeister kink is the distinctive angle or sweep at the base of a car’s rearmost pillar, where the side window line meets the rear bodywork. It became strongly associated with BMW because the company used it repeatedly as a visual signature across sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and SUVs.

The feature is named after Wilhelm Hofmeister, BMW’s director of design from 1955 to 1970. The first BMWs commonly credited with using it are the 3200 CS and the Neue Klasse BMW 1500, both shown in 1961. The design helped give BMWs a recognizable side profile while visually emphasizing the car’s rear-wheel-drive proportions.

The kink is not exclusive to BMW, however. Similar shapes appeared on several earlier cars from General Motors and other manufacturers. “Hofmeister curve” is understandable as a description, but “Hofmeister kink” is the established canonical name.
