The famous Cambrian fossil deposit in Canada that preserves soft-bodied organisms is the Burgess Shale.
The Burgess Shale is a fossil-bearing rock formation in the Canadian Rockies of British Columbia, mainly near Field in Yoho National Park, with important exposures in nearby Kootenay National Park. Its fossils date to the Middle Cambrian, roughly 508 million years ago, and include animals whose soft tissues would normally decay before fossilization.
Rapid burial by sediment helped preserve organisms as thin carbon-rich films and detailed impressions. The assemblage includes arthropods, sponges, trilobites, worms, and unusual animals such as Opabinia and Hallucigenia. Their strange body plans helped scientists investigate the diversity and evolutionary relationships of Cambrian life.
Palaeontologist Charles Doolittle Walcott discovered the most famous fossil beds in 1909 and collected more than 65,000 specimens over subsequent field seasons. The Burgess Shale is often confused with other Lagerstätten, including China’s Chengjiang deposits and Australia’s Emu Bay Shale, but those are separate fossil sites.
