What is the name of the bronze bull statue on Wall Street in New York City?
Answer
Charging Bull
Answer
Charging Bull
The bronze bull statue on Wall Street in New York City is called Charging Bull.
Created by Italian-American artist Arturo Di Modica, Charging Bull was conceived as a symbol of strength and optimism after the 1987 stock-market crash. Di Modica paid for the work himself and installed it without official permission outside the New York Stock Exchange in December 1989, presenting it as a gift to New Yorkers.
Police removed the sculpture, but public enthusiasm helped save it. It was reinstalled a few blocks south at Bowling Green, where it became one of Lower Manhattan’s most recognizable landmarks. Although commonly associated with Wall Street, the statue technically stands on Broadway just north of Bowling Green.
The nickname “Bull of Wall Street” is widely used, but Charging Bull is the sculpture’s canonical title. It is also sometimes confused with Fearless Girl, the smaller bronze statue installed facing it in 2017. Charging Bull represents financial optimism and prosperity, while its aggressive pose also reflects the market’s energy and unpredictability.
