What is the name of the broad Martian plain where NASA’s Opportunity rover landed?
Answer
Meridiani Planum
Answer
Meridiani Planum
NASA’s Opportunity rover landed on the broad Martian plain called Meridiani Planum.
Opportunity touched down there on January 25, 2004. The region lies near Mars’s equator and was selected because orbital observations indicated deposits of hematite, an iron oxide mineral that can form in association with water.
The rover’s investigations found sedimentary rocks and spherical hematite-rich concretions nicknamed “blueberries.” These findings supported the conclusion that liquid water had influenced the area’s geological history, although the ancient environment was not necessarily like a modern Earth lake or ocean.
Meridiani Planum is distinct from Gusev crater, where Opportunity’s twin Spirit landed. It is also different from Jezero crater, explored by Perseverance. These landing sites represent separate geological targets chosen for different scientific questions.
