The black mage child in Final Fantasy IX is Vivi.
Vivi is one of Final Fantasy IX’s central protagonists: a shy, gentle Black Mage who begins the story attending a play in Alexandria. His distinctive shadowed face, glowing eyes, and oversized hat echo the classic Final Fantasy Black Mage design, while his personal storyline gives that familiar class a deeper emotional identity.
Vivi’s journey centers on discovering where he came from and why he possesses feelings when many other Black Mages are treated as manufactured weapons. He eventually encounters a Black Mage village and learns about the short functional lifespan imposed on many of his kind. These discoveries turn a seemingly simple character into one of the game’s main reflections on mortality, identity, and what makes someone a person.
The full name is commonly written Vivi Ornitier in English references, while Orunitia also appears in some localizations and sources. Steiner, Zidane, and Quina are fellow Final Fantasy IX characters, but none is the game’s Black Mage child.
