What is the name of the Bennets' family estate?
Answer
Longbourn
Answer
Longbourn
The Bennets’ family estate is Longbourn. In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Longbourn is the Bennet family’s home and principal source of income, situated near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire.
Longbourn is more than a setting: its ownership drives much of the novel’s anxiety about marriage and inheritance. Because the estate is entailed to male heirs, Mr. Bennet cannot leave it to any of his five daughters. If he dies without a son, the property is expected to pass to his distant cousin, Mr. William Collins.
This is why Mrs. Bennet is so determined to see her daughters married advantageously. The family’s comfortable life at Longbourn is financially insecure, despite Mr. Bennet’s income and social position. Readers sometimes confuse Longbourn with Netherfield, which is rented by Mr. Bingley, or Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s much grander Derbyshire estate.
