What is the name of the bear in A.A. Milne's 'Winnie-the-Pooh'?

The story behind the answer

The bear in A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh is named Winnie-the-Pooh, often shortened to Pooh or Pooh Bear.

The character began as Christopher Robin Milne’s teddy bear. Christopher Robin renamed the toy after Winnie, a real black bear he saw at London Zoo, and “Pooh,” the name of a swan associated with the family. In the stories, Pooh is an anthropomorphic teddy bear who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood and is famously fond of “hunny.”

Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared by name in a Christmas story published in 1925. Milne’s book Winnie-the-Pooh followed in 1926, with illustrations by E. H. Shepard. The second major collection, The House at Pooh Corner, appeared in 1928.

A common mix-up comes from Disney adaptations, which usually style the name as “Winnie the Pooh,” without the hyphens. Baloo, Yogi Bear and Paddington Bear are separate fictional bears from other books, films and television traditions.
