What is the name of the beacon hill closest to Minas Tirith? The answer is Amon Dîn.

Amon Dîn was one of Gondor’s seven beacon-hills in the White Mountains. It stood east of the other beacon stations and was the first hill in the warning chain running westward from Minas Tirith toward Rohan. Because of that position, it was the beacon-hill nearest the city.

The beacons formed a rapid warning system rather than a line of fortifications. When Gondor faced grave danger, fires were lit from hill to hill, carrying the message across the mountains. In The Return of the King, the signal summons aid from Rohan during the siege of Minas Tirith, prompting Théoden and the Rohirrim to ride to Gondor’s assistance.

Amon Dîn is easy to confuse with Halifirien, the westernmost beacon-hill, or with Nardol and Eilenach, which occupied other positions in the chain. The name is also unrelated to Amon Hen and Amon Lhaw, the two hills beside Nen Hithoel where the Fellowship’s journey breaks apart.
